Part I
Journey To Mist Peak
Part I: Journey to Mist Peak
A disturbing vision awoke me from my slumber late last night. I don’t
know its full detail, only that it was set in the far future. I’m
not sure what disturbed me most about the vision—the massive,
continental-scale war taking place or the simple fact that I was not
present, a severe blow to my immortality’s pride, to be sure.
Dreams, however implausible and vague at times, will surely be the downfall
of the one who pays them no heed.
However, I did find it most gratifying that my progeny will come
to play such a prominent and benevolent role in that future. Unfortunately,
so will the brood of my dread counterpart. Such will always be the case,
I’m afraid. Light cannot exist without the accompanying darkness.
Endless day is not much more preferable to endless night.
Perhaps it is just a trick of the moonlight, but as I look out upon
this land that I have called home for centuries, I feel as if I can
actually watch the world slowly evolve. Will it be thus for my descendants?
It is the epitome of irony that to learn the great truths of life, one
must first die.
I often wonder when the Sacred Gods look down upon us, do they see
our lives for what they truly are, or merely as a spark on the crest
of the horizon? When our lives finally do burn out, does the next life
hold all that we have been promised? Where does one such as myself fit
into the carefully woven fabric of fate the Norns have decreed?
And what of my enemies, the teeming hordes of Darkness? Are they
entitled to the same afterlife as I? Or perhaps they train for Ragnarok
in their own way. For aren’t Good and Evil merely words used to
describe two sides of the same spectrum? Justice is viewed through a
prism: each angle holds a different perspective. Whatever the case,
I will continue to fight for the cause I believe to be right, which
in the end makes it right, does it not? Perception
varies greatly from one man to the next; mine simply seems the only
logical view.
